This morning the pantry looked for all the world like the finest of farmers markets. Countertops, boxes and bags were brimming with the following fresh produce: bananas, apples, plums, limes and lemons; potatoes, onions, carrots, tomatoes, lettuce, green beans, green peppers and squash.

Each week, volunteers unload 1,000 (that’s right, one thousand) pounds of fresh produce for display in the pantry. Usually by 8 AM, the refrigerators are filled with the more perishable items and by the end of day on Thursday pantry patrons have stocked their refrigerators and pantries with healthy, fresh vegetables and fruit.

Of course, that’s just part of the story.
